Cover art is a major component of any book!
I could buy a generic photo online, a template, or use AI and so many other sources, but…
I trust no one but a TEEN to be the artist for my upcoming book, DEATH OF DOWNTIME, by Conni Rasmussen
Details of Cover Art Contest
- Free to enter
- Ages 13-18 eligible
- $50 prize for the winner
- Art will be the cover art for my upcoming book, THE DEATH OF DOWNTIME for teens
Submission details
- Two submissions per person allowed
- Deadline for submission: midnight 5/30/24
- Winner will be notified by 6/30/24
- Submit artwork via email to [email protected]
- Submissions must include:
- Artwork
- Age
- Good contact email address in case you win!
- Description of the art medium used
- Explanation of how your artwork connects to the book theme
- Theme of the book: Teens need and want more downtime with family and friends and time alone without a screen.
- Artwork without your age, description, and connection to the book theme will not be considered.
Art contest details:
- Variety of all mediums are welcomed both by hand and computer graphic design
- Drawing, painting, collage, mixed media, original digital creations, photography, sketches etc
- NO AI, please! Don’t limit your creativity. Share your art with the world.
Physical artwork:
- Portrait orientation
- should be no larger than 6” x 9”
- take a photo or scan the original art in JPEG, PDF, PNG (at least 300 dpi resolution if possible)

Digital artwork:
- Portrait orientation
- submit digital art in JPEG ,PDF, or PNG file
- submit as high resolution if possible (minimum preferred 2,400 x 2,400 pixels)

Judging criteria
- Originality: did I already say NO to AI plz!
- creative techniques,
- interpretation of theme
HINTS to HELP as you create the book cover art!
- Cover art should reflect hints of the book’s theme
- Real life photo for cover art to connect to the potential audience can be powerful
- Cover art should evoke emotional responses
- Handwriting sometimes called modern scrawl, adds a human element & conveys nostalgia
- Cover art should have a unique style that communicates the essence of moods, teens, parents, no screens, and simplicity when the reader sees DEATH OF DOWNTIME on the cover.
- The title of the book (DEATH OF DOWNTIME), subtitle (for teens), and author name (Conni Rasmussen) should be included and not covered or hidden in the cover art
Quick Book Summary
This book is a guide and workbook designed for parents who want to help their teenagers enjoy more screen-free downtime with friends, family, and alone time. The “Death of Downtime” is an analysis of data from over 2,000 teenagers from 2013-2023 to highlight trends in their leisure activities.
Before the pandemic, teens were often over-scheduled, leaving them with no time for downtime. During the pandemic, teens had more free time, but they struggled to make it meaningful. As we are coming out on the other side of the pandemic, parents are looking for help in guiding their teens to engage in simple downtime activities and new hobbies that do not require screens.
The book offers practical solutions to slow teen life down in simple yet powerful ways with family, friends, and alone time without screens.
